Pam Grier is an actress who gained popularity by starring in many of the 1970's blaxploitation films, such as “Foxy Brown” and “Coffy“. She rose to fame throughout that decade and during the next. However, with the demise of blaxploitation films, her career suffered. She continued working in movies, although with not as much acclaim. The Quentin Tarantino film “Jackie Brown” revitalized her career, and opened up more job possibilities.
The roles she was cast in at the beginning of her career were some of the first which placed female characters on equal footing with a male character. Before these films, women, especially non-caucasian women were typically written as secondary characters to the male ones. The emergence of a strong female crime fighter was a breakthrough for women and filmmaking. Most of the blaxploitation films centered their plot lines around drug dealers and other delinquents, and they were often treated with more compassion than they were in other types of film. In blaxploitation films, the “bad guys” were a lot more three-dimensional than in the mainstream entertainment sector, and so were the all the characters. At the time of their release, these films answered a loud cry from all minorities about social and civic equality and therefore were extremely successful at the box office. Against the backdrop of America's race riots in the 1970's, these films sought an understanding and exploration of street justice.
By casting Pam Grier as the star, these films discovered a previously buried type. The high female leader, and warrior for justice that she mostly was in these films stirred admiration in both men and women, and in particular for those of African descent. At a time when racial integration was still meeting with resistance, the country was mired in civic unrest. America was in the middle of an unsupported war, and equality was promised, and that promised seemed unfulfilled.

Pam Grier was lauded as the “worst one-chick hit-squad that ever hit the town!” in Coffy and received similar acclaim for subsequent roles. She was tough and no-nonsense and incredibly beautiful a the same time. While some may feel that her beauty was exploited, many feel that it was honored and appreciated. Her presence filled a void in the fabric of American culture. She was a role model to many minority women for her achievements. It is also important to note that the characters that she played were looked up to tremendously as well. This is partly what helped her films achieve the success that they did.
She is shown on the poster for Foxy Brown in an alluring pose, wearing a nicely draped halter dress. While the image is brimming with sexuality, she is looking directly out at the viewer. She is not smiling, and her hands are firmly planted on her exposed knees. While she is holding her dress up in a slightly suggestive stance, she is also leveling the audience with her eyes, clearly stating that she is not to be messed with. Her straightforward presence while incredible alluring is also significantly intimidating. She is a great character for a costume party, or for Halloween, or even to bring life to a dusty history class. Her long hair, sometimes cascading down her back, was worn in many different styles.
